For workers
What to expect at your Employment Medicine assessment.
Whether you are attending a pre-employment medical or a fitness-for-duty assessment, our role is to complete a professional, fair clinical evaluation and provide clear information for your employer or referring organisation. Booking and appointment coordination are supported by InjuryEX.
What happens during a pre-employment medical
A pre-employment medical looks at whether you can safely meet the inherent requirements of a role. The exact content depends on the job and any industry requirements.

01
Check-in and consent
You will confirm your details, the role being assessed, and give consent for the medical assessment and report pathway.
02
Health questionnaire and discussion
A clinician reviews your medical history, current health, medications and any symptoms relevant to the job demands.
03
Examination and testing
This may include physical examination and, where required, tests such as vision, hearing, spirometry, grip strength, or drug and alcohol screening.
04
Outcome discussion
The clinician explains what was assessed. Results are reported to the referring employer or organisation according to the booking instructions.
What happens during a fitness for duty assessment
A fitness-for-duty assessment considers whether you can perform your job safely and reliably, with or without restrictions or adjustments. It is usually requested when there is a health concern related to work capacity or safety.

01
Understanding the concern
The clinician reviews the reason for referral, your role demands, and relevant medical information provided for the assessment.
02
Clinical assessment
This includes history, examination and, where needed, review of reports or further testing to understand your current capacity.
03
Role-related judgement
Findings are considered against the inherent requirements of your work — not as a general health check for unrelated issues.
04
Clear reporting
The report outlines medical findings, any restrictions or conditions, and the clinical basis for the fitness opinion.

Specialist assessments and Registrar / GP + Allied Health assessments
Both types of assessment are delivered by Employment Medicine. The difference is mainly about complexity — not about whether you will be treated with care and professionalism.
Registrar / GP + Allied Health assessments
These are commonly used for pre-employment medicals, industry medicals, standard fitness reviews, surveillance and allied health input. They are delivered by Occupational Medicine Registrars, GPs and Allied Health practitioners within Employment Medicine.
Specialist assessments
These are used for more complex matters — for example contested capacity, complex medicolegal questions, permanent impairment, or specialist fitness-for-duty opinions. They are delivered by Occupational & Environmental Medicine Specialists and other medical or surgical specialists under Employment Medicine.
How to prepare for your appointment
- Bring photo identification and any referral or booking confirmation.
- Bring glasses, hearing aids or mobility aids you normally use.
- Bring a current medication list and relevant recent medical reports if you have them.
- Wear clothing suitable for a physical examination or functional testing if advised in your booking details.
- Arrive a little early so check-in and paperwork are unhurried.
- Tell the clinician about symptoms, injuries or work limitations that relate to the role being assessed.
What happens after the assessment
After your appointment, the clinician completes the report required by the referral. In most cases the report is provided to the employer, insurer or referring organisation that arranged the assessment.
You can ask during the appointment what will be shared and how results are usually communicated. If further information or testing is needed, that will be explained before the assessment is finalised.
Booking status and workflow are supported by InjuryEX, which helps keep appointments and reporting organised.
Professionalism and fairness
Employment Medicine assessments are clinical evaluations based on evidence, role requirements and recognised occupational medicine standards. We aim to treat every worker and candidate with respect, privacy and clarity — and to report findings accurately, without pressure to reach a predetermined outcome.
